A cream-coloured card dated 1945, signed with a fountain pen by Jessie Matthews, and adding Best Wishes. Matthews started out as a dancer and singer before moving towards acting, and in the 1930s she was one of the biggest stars on both sides of the Atlantic. Married three times, she had numerous affairs and unsuccessful pregnancies, and was often involved in public scandals. From the 1950s she worked more in the theatre, and in the 60s found new fame when she took over the leading role of Mary Dale in the BBC's long-running daily radio soap, 'The Dales', formerly 'Mrs Dale's Diary'.
