A slip of headed notepaper from the Waldorf-Astoria hotel in New York City, signed in black ink by Cole Porter (1891 - 1964), the American composer and songwriter. Noted for his sophisticated, bawdy lyrics, clever rhymes, and complex forms, his works include songs like "Night and Day", "I Get a Kick out of You", "Well, Did You Evah!" and "I've Got You Under My Skin". He was married to Linda Lee Thomas, a rich, Kentucky-born divorcée eight years his senior, and they owned an apartment in the Waldorf Towers, where she died in 1954. Porter's 1934 song "You're the Top," contains the lyric, "You're the top, you're a Waldorf salad..." Porter chose to perform on Steinway pianos exclusively, and he owned a Steinway piano, which is currently in the lobby of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.
