A page from an autograph album signed October 6th 1949 at The Dorchester hotel in London by Greer Garson (1904 -1996), the British-born actress who was one of MGM's major stars of the 1940s. The fourth most-nominated woman for the Best Actress Oscar, Garson received seven nominations including a record-tying (with Bette Davis) five consecutive nominations (1941-1946), winning for her performance in the title role of Mrs Minerva (1942). Spotted by Louis B. Mayer on the West End stage while he was in London looking for new talent, Garson was signed to a contract with MGM in late 1937. She began work on Goodbye, Mr. Chips, her first film, in late 1938, and received further critical acclaim the next year for her role as Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice. In 1941she became a major box-office star with Blossoms in the Dust, and starred in two Oscar-nominated films in 1942: Mrs. Miniver and Random Harvest. Other notable movie credits include  Madame Curie (1943), Mrs. Parkington (1944), The Valley of Decision (1945), Julia Misbehaves (1948), That Forsyte Woman (1949), The Miniver Story (1950) and Scandal at Scourie (1953).
