He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performances in Come Fill the Cup (1952) and Teacher's Pet (1959), finally winning that award for They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969). Other notable film credits include Ask Any Girl (1959), That Touch of Mink (1962), Kid Galahad (1962), Five Miles to Midnight (1962), A Ticklish Affair (1963), Strange Bedfellows (1965) and Lovers and Other Strangers (1970). In 1978, Young murdered his 31-year-old wife three weeks after their wedding before turning the gun on himself and committing suicide at the age of 64.
