Hemmings is best remembered for his roles in British films and television programmes of the 1960s and 1970s, particularly Blowup (1966) which made him and co-star Vanessa Redgrave into stars. He starred in movies such as The Charge of the Light Brigade (1968), Barbarella (1968), Only When I Larf (1968), The Walking Stick (1970), Juggernaut (1974) and The Prince And The Pauper (1977), before relocating to Hollywood where he acted in, and directed, TV shows such as Airwolf, Quantum Leap, Magnum P.I., and The A-Team. After returning to England he had roles in several films, including Gladiator (2000) Last Orders (2001) Gangs of New York (2002) and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003). Hemmings died in 2003 at age 62 of a heart attack, in Bucharest, Romania, on the film set of Blessed, after he had finished shooting his scenes for the day.
