A typed letter on his headed paper, dated January 1979, and signed with a black pen by Norman Wisdom (1915-2010), the English comedian, singer-songwriter and actor best known for a series of comedy films produced between 1953 and 1966 featuring his hapless onscreen character Norman Pitkin. These films secured Wisdom a celebrity status as far flung as South America, Iran and many Eastern Bloc countries, particularly in Albania where his films were the only western ones permitted by the government. Charlie Chaplin famously referred to Wisdom as his "favourite clown". Wisdom was knighted in 2000 and spent much of his later life on the Isle of Man. Some of his later appearances included roles in Last of the Summer Wine and Coronation Street, and he retired from acting at the age of 90 after his health declined.

The letter, from The Hippodrome, Birmingham, where Norman was appearing in pantomime, thanks a fan for his good wishes and sends him a photograph. Ideal for mounting a portrait to make a great display piece.
